4.9 Electronic Mail

  1. Use the MAIL program to send yourself a message about anything you like. Use the pine mail system.

    To start pine:

    $ pine

Pine is a menu driven system that is available on several platforms. At the bottom of the screen there is a list of various commands that you can use. You can also select the first letter of an item on a menu or use the cursor control keys to highlight your selection then use the enter key.

    Select:

      C COMPOSE MESSAGE - Compose and send/post a message

fill in the fields "To:" and "Subject:" and then add a message in the "--- Message Text ---" section. For the "To:" field use your user-id. For the "Subject:" field use "Mail Lab"
    To: your-username
    Subject: Mail Lab
    ----- Message Text ----
    A message to your self.

  2. Send the mail with a ^X and a Y.
  3. Quit pine and then get back into pine. Give the I command to see the index with the message that you just sent. At this point you can see why you ALWAYS want an accurate "subject" for e-mail messages both sent and received.
  4. Select your message.
  5. Reply to your message then type eXpunge to check your mailbox without leaving pine. This will also remove all deleted mail messages. While reading a mail message, you could type Delete to discard it, but don't do it this time.
  6. See what "folders" pine has automatically created by using the "L" command.
  7. Print out the mail message with the "Y" command. You may need to Extract the message to MAIL.TXT and use then use VAX/VMS print command.
  8. Send a message to me at "ltaber@pima.edu" with the subject "Mail Lab" and a few lines of message text.
Print a copy of MAIL.TXT, and turn it in marked with:
Your-Name
Lab 4.9: e-mail
TABER CSC135
Place the lab in the instructor hand-in box in BUS R6E, the "terminal room".
