4.6 Netscape Topic

Download the Netscape web browser and install it. If you are doing web development it is handy, though not essential to have a web browser running locally.

This means you will need to set up X11 and get the mouse working.

I also want you to set up gpm the mouse server for virtual consoles.

4.6.1 Preparation

  1. Read about X11, Chapter 10 "Running Linux" Second Edition.
  2. Download Netscape.
  3. Read about gpm (man gpm).
  4. Know about virtual consoles. (Switch between them with a Ctrl-F1 through Ctrl-F6. From X to a virtual console with Ctrl-Alt-F1 through Ctrl-Alt-F6. Switch back to X11 with Ctrl-F7.

4.6.2 Group Task

  1. Install and configure X11. Use the files on red's anonymous ftp server. look in the directory "pub/csc225". This is usually located in /etc/X11/XF86Config. The server is XF86_S3V this is located at /usr/bin/X11/XF86_S3V. Use the debian package xserver-s3v it is also on red.
  2. Install Netscape Navigator (also on red)
  3. Configure gpm.
  4. Copy some stuff from one console to another.
